Empowering Communities Through Health: VSNM Students Shine at Medical Exhibition in Lira City
Lira City, Uganda – In a remarkable display of community service, learning, and partnership, the students and staff of the Victoria School of Nursing and Midwifery (VSNM) held a successful medical exhibition at the Mayor’s Garden in Lira City. The event, powered by Stanbic Bank, drew enthusiastic participation from residents and stakeholders, marking a significant step in addressing community health challenges—particularly non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
The one-day outreach not only showcased the skills and commitment of VSNM students but also offered much-needed medical services to the public. It served as a platform for students to gain real-world exposure in community health and disease prevention, especially in managing the growing burden of non-communicable diseases like hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular illnesses.
A Learning Experience Beyond the Classroom
For the VSNM students, the exhibition was more than a health event—it was a practical learning experience. Under the supervision of their lecturers and clinical instructors, the students conducted blood pressure screenings, glucose testing, body mass index assessments, and shared health education messages with residents on how to prevent and manage NCDs through proper diet, regular physical activity, and routine check-ups.
“This was an invaluable opportunity for our students to interact directly with the community,” said one of the faculty members at VSNM. “It allows them to put theory into practice and understand the human face of healthcare.”
Compassion in Action: Free Malaria Treatment for Street Children
One of the most touching highlights of the day was the care extended to vulnerable children living on the streets of Lira. Several children who came for free malaria screening tested positive using the rapid diagnostic test (RDT). In a gesture of compassion and social responsibility, these children received prompt treatment—completely free of charge.
“This small act of kindness can save lives,” noted a VSNM student who helped administer the treatments. “Every life matters, and it’s our duty as future health professionals to serve all, especially the most vulnerable.”
Community Partnership That Matters
The event was made possible through the generous support of Stanbic Bank, a longtime advocate for community development in Uganda. Their involvement not only helped facilitate medical supplies and logistical support but also reinforced the importance of corporate partnerships in advancing public health.
“We’re proud to support initiatives that impact lives directly,” said a Stanbic Bank representative at the event. “Our goal is to help communities thrive, and health is a foundational part of that journey.”
Looking Ahead
As the sun set on a successful day of service, learning, and healing, it was clear that the collaboration between VSNM and Stanbic Bank had made a meaningful impact on both the students and the Lira community. With strengthened resolve, VSNM looks forward to continuing its mission of training compassionate healthcare professionals and promoting health for all.
