VSNM Students and Tutors Take the Lead on Unity FM to Raise Awareness on Malaria Risks to Pregnant Women and Young Children
Lira City –7th March 2023
As part of its ongoing public health outreach efforts, the Vision School of Nursing and Midwifery (VSNM) recently partnered with Unity FM to broadcast a powerful community sensitization session on the dangers of malaria, with a special focus on pregnant women and children under five years old.
Appearing live in the studio were a group of passionate VSNM nursing students accompanied by their clinical tutors, who together delivered timely and life-saving information to thousands of listeners across the Lango sub-region.
Malaria remains one of the leading causes of illness and death in Uganda, particularly affecting expectant mothers and young children whose immune systems are more vulnerable. During the session, the team shared expert insights on malaria symptoms, prevention strategies, and the importance of early treatment.
“Malaria in pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, low birth weight, and even maternal death,” one of the tutors explained. “We must empower our communities with knowledge so they can protect their families before it’s too late.”
The students, guided by their tutors, spoke confidently about the proper use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets, environmental control methods like draining stagnant water, and the importance of prompt testing and treatment at nearby health facilities.
The Unity FM program was interactive, with listeners calling in to ask questions and share their concerns. Many expressed appreciation for the clarity and professionalism demonstrated by the students and tutors.
A caller from Otuke remarked,
“It’s refreshing to hear young people so passionate about saving lives. VSNM is doing a great job preparing future health workers who care.”
The session was one of several activities in VSNM’s broader malaria awareness campaign, which includes school outreaches, health talks, and community distribution of mosquito nets.
This radio appearance highlighted VSNM’s commitment to combining classroom learning with real-world public engagement, ensuring that both students and tutors contribute meaningfully to solving pressing health issues in their communities.
